Description
This very special Gibson Custom Shop Southern Jumbo is one of only 12 made of its kind and released in the United States in 2006. The Gibson Southern Jumbo was originally released in 1942 as the Gibson SJ and replaced the J-55. It was targeted to Gibson’s dealers in southern states, and while it is structurally similar to the Gibson J-45, it is a bit fancier, with split parallelogram position markers and more binding. Under the leadership of Ren Ferguson, Gibson Acoustic in Montana obtained a number of historic instruments and based new models on careful reviews of their dimensions and construction. The Gibson Southern Jumbo is one of the results of that effort. There are often differences in some models from the originals, but the construction is the traditional Southern Jumbo – solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck, and rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. The Gibson inlays on the headstock and the split parallelogram position markers are mother of pearl.
